Alfred E. Neuman

Why Alfred E. Neuman:

Well, the good man hasn’t at least had a decent dinner since November 1954. One may wonder if he’s still alive. What the heck, did he ever truly exist? Alfred. E. Neuman himself would say:

"What, me worry?"

We assume that everybody knows our highly-estimated guest. If not, below you’ll find a short bio. Always comes in handy when you don’t have a conversation subject ready whilst being in the pub, the library, at the opera or at the fastfoodjoint right around the corner.

Harvey Kurtzman, who discovered Alfred E. Neuman, saw this boy for the very first time at a postcard and couldn’t let go of this strange figure: "It was a face that didn't have a care in the world, except mischief," remembers Kurtzman years later.

Kurtzman may have met the idiotic grinning Neuman for the first time in the fifties of the former century, but he existed already decennia before then. However, no one knows the precise origin of this character. Sure is that since the beginning years of the 19th century (and some say even at the end of the 18th century) he pops up in print.

His image, varying in appearances and made by diverse artists, is used for advertisements (from medicines till the dentist!), political postcards (‘Vote Roosevelt’), logos for pubs and soft drinks and many more. Until MAD Magazine adopts Neuman and makes him the mascot of their magazine.

Since, Alfred has almost appeared on every cover.  Being a symbol of the unique sense of humour that

the magazine underwrites. But above all, he’s become part of the American zeitgeist, after which media like  The Simpsons and the pop-culture like to make references to.

Alfred E. Neuman in five MAD quotes:

"How come we choose from just two people for President, and fifty for Miss America?"

"In retrospect it becomes clear that hindsight is definitely overrated!"

"It takes one to know one -- and vice versa!"

"The U.N. is a place where governments opposed to free speech demand to be heard!"

"Who says nothing is impossible? Some people do it every day!"
